I also was apprehensive about "A Complete Unknown" but as a huge Dylan fan, I really, really enjoyed it.

Along with "Walk The Line" and "Ray" it's a good reminder that, at least, in the musical sphere, American culture is not completely beyond redemption 🙏🏼

It’s really a remarkable film and made me so nostalgic for Dylan songs I listened to growing up… and I admit that Chamalet was actually the perfect casting for the role (he even looks like young Dylan!)

Utterly convincing in the role

Many people have expressed similar sentiments about the ubiquity of Chamalet, but the only other thing I saw him in was "The French Dispatch".

Even big fans of Wes Anderson had problems with that film, but I think it's amazing!

I haven’t seen “The French Dispatch” but I didn’t hear great things about it.. I might give it a chance. The fact that two of the Oscar nominated movies this year have Chamalet shows how much of a Hollywood darling he’s become!

And very cool that “Walk the Line” was also directed by Mangold - and that he chose to include Johnny Cash character in the Dylan movie (I didn’t know those two shared a friendship!). American culture has definitely supplied its fair share of music legends, and their fascinating stories!

The parallels between the lives of Johnny Cash and Ray Charles are pretty stunning. I've watch both films back-to-back on two occasions.

Three of our favourite movies of the last several years. Mangold is a genius.

I never heard of Anora till it was nominated for an Oscar. A colleague of mine told me that Emilia Perez was highly controversial. The actor allegedly made disparaging comments ten years ago. Netflix removed the show runner. I am curious to witness A Complete Unknown with Mister Timothée Chalamet. I realise he’s become Hollywood’s darling. I am indifferent about the French Dispatch. Wes Anderson is definitely a surrealist auteur.

I highly recommend watching Sean Baker’s films (the director of Anora) - my favorite of his is ‘The Florida Project’. All the ones listed are worthy though, depending on what mood you’re in/ seeking!

I have always admired William Defoe even since The Last Temptation of Christ. He’s a stellar actor. I was just perusing a film review of Mickey 17. It reminds a bit like Being John Malkovich. I used to be a student filmmaker at Purchase College. I write poetry now. Thanks for the reminder. Have a good day now.

In the past several years, it’s been difficult trying to find movies that felt worth the time to watch. I think there are several reasons for that to include the sheer amount of content created these days. This offered a few new possibilities, thank you 😊

Totally! I often get discouraged when I’m in the mood for a movie and then end up spending 20 minutes scrolling through the options… and then give up because I get overwhelmed. Having a movie list that I can refer to has really helped that! Hope you enjoy these 🍿

This missive got me so excited, Sabrina! Love the twist, the new angle - and a good, curated recommendation, always. I’ll be basically adding all of these to my “movie list”, the only one I’ve already watched is Anora. Also, I’m glad I’m not the only person out there who needs to be mindful when choosing to watch a movie as I, too, get totally engrossed - I remember “spying” on my parents while they watched “The silence of the lambs” when I was a kid and even though I have no clear memories of the movie whatsoever, I still feel a deep sense of terror in my bones just thinking about it. Thank you for some delightful inspiration on this Sunday morning! 🍿🎥

Thanks Claudia! I love having a movie list, so I don’t have to spend too much time scrolling when I’m in a movie mood… I’m curious to hear which ones you like from this list! They all provide a very different mood. And omg getting a sneak peak of “Silence of the Lambs” as a kid would be quite traumatizing! Movies really stick with me for so long…for better or worse!

Great post, Sabrina. I (Marco) am like you in that I can be completely transported in a movie theatre, so totally relate.

They really do provide such an immersive and emotional experience. I can’t watch horror movies anymore! 🫣 And that quote.. such a statement for our times.
