My favorite art involves some sort of remix, so I loved this post! The section on scent was especially unexpected! Also, very cool to learn more about Jolene!
Oooo now I’m curious to know what your favorite art is! 🤩 It’s been helpful for my own creative process to break the myth of originality. And it was so wonderful to collab with Jolene. Substackers unite! 🙏
Way back in college, I wrote my senior thesis on Tom Phillips's A Humument. I also love Joseph Cornell's boxes. In general, though, 19th-century scrapbooks are my favorite art form!
What is original? Nothing is. It is perceived as such by some because they lack the pretext. A literary term that defines the sum of "texts" known to the recipient at the moment of absorbing "text". An author may intertextually refer to other works a reader knows and as such the reader will recognise the reference. People may not know the details about the invention of the light bulb, they lack the pretext. Same with any work in any medium throughout history, as Tim wrote about Shakespeare. A fascinating topic. How can we be original? Does it matter?
Can't escape the intertextual soup. Some may even say it's preprogrammed. Prototype semantics. I give you a word and you take 10 seconds to write down the first three words that pop into your head. Ready? "Bird"
The words chosen will be from the same range as any other person would choose, regardless of geography, language, upbringing, etc. Fascinating!
That’s so fascinating! And I love the term “inter textual soup”! Bird = freedom, flight, feather? Is it normal my associations all start with the same letter? 🤔
It is special! those three are certainly in the top tier, if you were to add a 4th what would it beak? 😂
It's more fun at parties. Hand out a piece of paper and everyone has to write 3 words in 10 seconds. Doesn't have to be about "bird." Then again, some people write the funniest things, esp. if they know.
Ooooo I'd love to hear Kingsolver speak about it. Which radio/interview was it? In the preface of the book Kingsolver shares such juicy background on how the idea of this book remix came to her. Can't wait to dive deeper!
That's so fascinating about Shakespeare! And it really goes to show that the work of "remixers" can become more prominent and influential than the original! Thanks for sharing.

Ps: and Dickens is getting a double highlight this week ;)

And yes! Substackers unite! I love it!
Oh yes! Our shared love for ‘A Humument’! 🤩
Hi, Jillian! 😊

Exactly! We put so much emphasis on originality but it’s quite the myth! We’ve all been influenced by other people’s work (consciously or not).

Great post, so much good stuff in here! The Copperfield/Kingsolver novel is on my list. Heard her talking about it on the radio the other day.

I can't remember - I think it was an interview on BBC Radio 4's Today show last week
I spent over an hour going through a lot of the resources in this post. You’ve opened my eyes to a whole new way of seeing creativity. Thank you.
I love hearing how you went deep down the rabbit hole 🐇 🕳️ ! And so glad it opened up new perspectives on creativity 🙌
Talk about remix! You cat-pair photo, which is wonderful, is much like what I am trying to do on my site. https://terryjallen.substack.com/
Yes indeed! 🤗
Great post, Sabrina, thank you for inviting me to be part of it! 🥐 🍩
Thank you so much Jolene! It was so fun to collaborate with you! 🫶
I will link to my post on Friday ❤️🥐🍩
